Climate YES South Africa – Capacity Building at Thabong, Welkom

On Tuesday, 23 June 2026, Climate YES South Africa hosted a Climate Justice Workshop at the Church of Grace in Thabong, Welkom. The workshop brought together 28 young people from various ecumenical churches across Matjhabeng to deepen their understanding of climate justice and strengthen youth leadership in environmental action.

The programme began with interactive ice-breaker activities facilitated by Teboho Mbhele, a member of the Climate YES South Africa Executive Committee, creating a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for participants. Pulane Ntlatseng introduced attendees to Climate YES’s vision and mission, highlighting the movement’s work empowering young people of faith to become advocates for climate justice. She encouraged participants to join the growing global network of young faith leaders committed to caring for creation and promoting environmental justice.

Teboho Mbhele then delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the Theology of Climate Justice, tracing the development of the concept from the early 1900s to the present day. He challenged participants to embrace a balanced, faith-centred approach to environmental justice, emphasising that caring for creation is both a divine calling and a shared responsibility. He reminded the group that meaningful transformation is made possible through God’s power working alongside faithful human action.

Bino Makhalanyane facilitated an interactive session using the See, Judge, Act methodology. Participants reflected on the environmental challenges affecting Matjhabeng, identified the root causes of environmental degradation within their communities, and explored practical, faith-based responses. The session encouraged young people to recognise that if these challenges remain unaddressed, they will continue to threaten the well-being and future of their communities.

Climate YES South Africa extends its sincere appreciation to the Global Steering Committee, the SA Climate YES team, all ecumenical partners who participated, and the Church of Grace for generously hosting this important workshop. Together, we continue to empower young people of faith to become agents of hope, justice, and environmental stewardship in their communities.
