Safeguarding Our Oceans: A Unified Call to Action – World Oceans Day 2025
Article by Eric Kapira, Climate YES – Tanzania
My name is Erick Kapira, a champion for climate change in Tanzania and the chairperson of Climate Yes Tanzania. We have been involved in various environmental conservation activities, particularly focusing on marine environments, through the following activities:
1. Cleaning beaches by removing plastic waste.
2. Planting mangroves to protect coastal areas.
3. Educating beachgoers about proper waste management.
Last year, we conducted a beach cleaning initiative that involved sorting various types of plastic waste according to their producers or companies. This experience made us discover that many energy companies are among the top producers of plastic waste and have poor waste management practices.

On World Oceans Day, we are reminded that our oceans are more than just vast expanses of water; they are vital ecosystems that sustain life on Earth. Yet, climate change and pollution threaten these precious resources. Rising temperatures lead to coral bleaching, while plastic waste chokes marine life and disrupts entire food chains. The ocean’s delicate balance is tipping, and if we do not act, we risk losing not only biodiversity but also the livelihoods of millions who depend on healthy oceans.
As we reflect on our relationship with the sea, we must recognize that protecting our oceans is not just an environmental concern; it is a moral imperative. The time for change is now. By advocating for sustainable practices, reducing our carbon footprint, and supporting ocean conservation, we can create a healthier world for future generations.

“The heart of our planet beats within the waves, and as stewards of the Earth, we must protect this life force before it’s too late.”
Join us in preserving our oceans. Together, we can turn the tide for a sustainable future.
