A Gathering of Young Minds for Climate Action

On the 2nd and 3rd of August 2024, the South Africa Climate Action Network, the Global Shapers Community: Tshwane Hub, and the African Climate Reality Project hosted the Local Conferences of Youth (LCOY) South Africa 2024.

This significant event convened over 100 youth at the iconic Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, marking a pivotal moment in the fight against climate change.

Exploring the Theme of “Just Transition”
Under the overarching theme of “Just Transition,” the conference aimed to delve deep into various critical aspects of climate action. The concept of a Just Transition emphasizes the need to move towards a sustainable, low-carbon economy in a way that is fair and inclusive to all stakeholders, particularly those most affected by the shift.

Crafting the Youth Position on Just Transition
On the second day of the conference, delegates participated in a workshop led by Thando Lukuko, focusing on drafting a unified youth stance on the Just Transition. This workshop was a dynamic and collaborative effort, allowing delegates to contribute their perspectives and insights. The result was a comprehensive Youth Position Statement on the Just Transition, encapsulating the collective vision and demands of South Africa’s youth.

Moving Forward
The LCOY South Africa 2024 was more than just a conference; it was a catalyst for action, empowering young people to take an active role in shaping a sustainable future. By fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and building networks, the event laid the groundwork for ongoing collaboration and advocacy.

As the delegates return to their respective communities, they carry with them the momentum and inspiration gained from the conference. The Youth Position Statement on the Just Transition will serve as a guiding document, advocating for policies and practices that ensure a fair and inclusive transition to a green economy.

Conclusion
The Local Conferences of Youth South Africa 2024 highlighted the vital role of youth in the climate movement. Through engaging discussions, expert presentations, and collaborative workshops, the event empowered young leaders to champion the cause of a Just Transition.
